Consolidation of France's position

The highly expected World University Rankings 2025 by the Times Higher Education has just been released to review over 2,000 universities across 115 countries. France improves its overall score compared with 2024, with 50 institutions ranked, including four in the Top 100: Paris Sciences et Lettres University, Paris-Saclay University, Polytechnic Institute of Paris and Sorbonne University.

This is also the case for France, which has seen its number of ranked establishments increase: seven more establishments have been included in the 2025 ranking, bringing the total number of ranked establishments for France to 50. According to the Ministry of Higher Education, this increase reflects “the investment made by French universities in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalization”.

This good score, which consolidates France's position, reinforces “France's academic and scientific visibility abroad”. In detail, France boasts four institutions in the Top 100: Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), which retains its position as France's leading university, ranking 11th in Europe and 42nd worldwide. It is followed by Université Paris-Saclay (64th worldwide), Institut Polytechnique de Paris (71st) and Sorbonne Université (76th).

14 institutions in the Top 500 (2024)

As the French Ministry of Higher Education points out, in terms of number of institutions, France ranks 5th in Europe, ex-aequo with Germany, after the UK (107 institutions), Italy and Spain ex-aequo (55 institutions).

A closer look at the rankings shows that France has 14 institutions in the Top 500, including 10 other French institutions:

    183rd worldwide: Université Paris Cité ;
    between 201st and 300th place: Ecole normale supérieure de Lyon ;
    between 301st and 400th place: IMT Atlantique, Institut Agro, Université de Montpellier, Université Grenoble Alpes;
    between 401st and 500th place: Aix-Marseille Université, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Université de Bordeaux, Université de Toulouse.

Seven new institutions ranked

Perhaps most importantly, as the Ministry of Higher Education also points out, the ranking now includes seven new French institutions. These are :

    École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort and Université Savoie Mont-Blanc (ranked between 801st and 1000th);
    Université d'Orléans (1001-1200) ;
    INSA Strasbourg , Université d'Angers, La Rochelle Université and Université de Rouen Normandie (1201-1500).

The new French Minister of Higher Education and Research, Patrick Hetzel, congratulated “all 50 French institutions ranked” and welcomed “the increase in the number of French institutions present”. The Minister also thanked “all the teams for their work, which contributes to increasing France's international influence and attractiveness”.
